FOR THE 24TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Highlights of the Annual Conference Held February 2018
The speakers this year again shared the stories of how God was with them on their life journeys right up to the moment of standing before us on February 24, 2018. Each speaker shared encounters with key people in their lives, and key decisions that sometimes took them in directions they never expected, or would have avoided, but that in some way revealed God’s purpose. Their talks were gifts of the heart offered to reveal God among us.
One thing is true for all the speakers: key people along the way brought the good news of Jesus Christ by their words and example. For one speaker it was his mother, then a talk by a scientist/apologist, and later practicing law with a prominent Christian attorney. One speaker described her early Church experiences, the roles of her father and mother, her husband, and a law firm of other Christian attorneys. Yet another shared how a personally traumatic event set her on a course of representing abuse victims by court appointment. Another shared how a family line of Baptist ministers and encounters with civil rights leaders led him to the conviction that “all lives matter.”
Each year new speakers present us with a variation of an unchanging truth: God loves us. God takes the broken pieces and restores them, or he takes our blessings and magnifies them.
In the minutes after the conference, a friend and I discussed his feelings about God’s work in the lives of speakers. He referenced John 6:44-45: “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me.
I saw in this verse that God was active in each speaker’s life to draw him or her closer to Himself. But it did not stop there. We the listeners were “taught by God.” By their courageous sharing, we too were drawn closer.
