Attorney Ralph Martinez led this month’s discussion with the subject:  “For Goodness’ Sake.”  He invited us to reflect on the good characters of men and women we had known in our lives.  More importantly, he presented scriptures that suggested the purpose of goodness is to reflect the goodness of Christ through our behaviors.  For example, Matt 5:16 [NRSV] states:  Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”  Yet, grace also is needed we discovered in our discussion, for who can be perfectly good?  One of our members shared a bit of wisdom offered by his spiritual director.  When the member confided his frustration at continuously falling short of his spiritual discipline, the Director replied: “Welcome to the human race, buddy!” Maybe of the four questions our topic leader presented this month, this one applies in such situations:  “What does it mean to live depending on God in order to live virtuously?”
